Communicating with maps - symbology and printouts

We are going to review tools that will help you to communicate using your farm maps:

  • Using symbology to show the information that you want to highlight
  • Using labels based on attribute data
  • Using the printout tool to send it the printer, or to a graphic file


Download sample data

For these exercises we are going to download a sample dataset: 'Sample Farm IA'

For this purpose, you can follow the steps detailed in Download sample data, selecting 'Sample Farm IA' as the initial dataset, which can be found under the 'Tutorials_en' folder:

Exercise 01 - Create a Soil map and report

Label soil features and create a Printout


  1. Double-click on the soils layer under the group 'Farm Layout' in the eferences Panel, on the left side of the screen.

  2. To label soil Map Units with attribute “MUSYM”, select the Image:GIS_gis_Edit_03_01.jpg  Edit cartography and layer properties tool. The Layer Properties screen appears. 
  3. Click on the Symbology tab, then go to the labeling tab, and check “MUSYM” as attribute. Click on 'Font options' and select a font size of 7, black letters on white back ground.
    Also, use 'More Options' to place labels in the Position: Middle center.

  4. The Map is now labeled with MUSYM (Map Unit Symbols).

  5. You can save to an image file or create a printout with the Print tool. Go to the Print tool icon Image:GIS_gis_Navi_08_01.jpg on the Navigation Toolbar at the top. The map layout preview appears. On the map layout, you can setup your title, move the north arrow, select references, save to a file or send to the printer, and other options.   6. Please review the different options available in the Print tool.

    In our example, we are going to use the options:
    . Save as 'map and references'
    . Save file: sample print.jpg, as  a .JPG file




Create a soils table by exporting to a MS Excel spreadsheet.

  1. Click on the “Soils” layer in the References Panel to make it active.

  2. Select soil map units by clicking on the Rectangle Selection tool Image:GIS_gis_Navi_01c_01.jpg from the Selection toolset Image:GIS_gis_Navi_01_01.jpg , on the left of the Navigation Toolbar and draw a window to include them.

  1. Click on the Edit Selected Object Data tool  Image:GIS_gis_Navi_07_01.jpg. Once the information table is shown, click on Export, save it to your local disk, and the excel spreadsheet will be created. You can delete there the unwanted columns.

Exercise 02 - Create a map with field numbers and crops per field


Import sample data

In this exercise we are going to import sample fields that were digitized in the 'Fields_Producer' layer in this tutorial:  Using drawing and data editing tools If you have completed this tutorial and have saved the project, you can use that data for this exercise. Otherwise, you may import it into your project following these steps:

  1. Download the file 'sample_Fields.lay'  from this link, and save it to a local folder.
  2. Select the Image:GIS_gis_Edit_10_01.jpg  Backup Layers Tool to restore the .lay file.
  3. Click on the tab Restore, and then Click on Browse. A window will pop up for you to search for the 'sample_Fields.lay' file that you saved in your local disk in step 1. Once you find it, click on Open.

  4. The layer "Sample_Fields" contained in the .lay is listed. Select it to add it to the current project by clicking on the checkbox on the right.

  5. Click on Restore. The restoring process will start. During this, GeoAgro GIS will automatically compare the structures of the imported layers with the ones predefined by the system. When this process finishes, the following window will be shown:

Create a map with Crop types, with symbology and labels

Double-Click on the “Sample_Fields” layer to make it active and zoom to its extents


let’s review the attribute data of the Fields

  1. Select all the Fields in layer ‘Sample_Fields’ with one of the options from the Selection tools
  2. Go to the Query tool, and select the option 'Quey data by selection'.

    The attribute table for the objects you have selected will open.

    You can see that some of the fields have numbers and crop types assigned

Now, let’s assign colors and labels to the crop types

Select the Image:GIS_gis_Edit_03_01.jpg  Edit cartography and layer properties tool. The Layer Properties screen appears. 


  1. Click on the Symbology tab, then choose the option ‘Classes’, since we are going to assign different colors to the two type of crops in the fields (corn and soybean).

  2. In the Classes wizard, choose: Identifier: CROP

  3. Then, assign colors to each type of crop.
    In the Fill box (lower left), assign a orange tone for corn, and a green tone for soybean

  4. Then, assign labels to each type of crop
    In the Label box (lower right), check the “FIELD_NAME”, "CROP".

  5. In the ‘More options’ link, select Position: Middle Center, separator: dash

  6. Choose the paint icon, to apply the label parameters to all classes (types of crops).

  7. Finally, you can change the layer’s transparency by clicking on the eye icon of the ‘Sample_Fields’ layer, and slide the bar to give a certain transparency

  8. Your map should now look like this

  9. You can save to an image file or create a printout with the Print tool. Go to the Print tool icon Image:GIS_gis_Navi_08_01.jpg on the Navigation Toolbar at the top.
