Creating Maps

You can create a variety of maps for reporting, and include them in the CNMP report. We will just review a couple of cases as examples.

Exercise 01 - Create a Soil map and report

 Start GeoAgro GIS by double clicking on its icon at your desktop; You may also run it by using the Windows® Start menu. The Project Selection window will pop up. Select the "Sample CNMP" project that you restored from Sample Data CNMP

1. Turn on the soils layer by clicking on the eye icon on the References Panel, on the left side of the screen.
   
   
2. To label soil Map Units with attribute “MUSYM”: Click on the Layer Symbology tool in the layer panel on the right side.
   
3. Click on the Symbology tab, then go to the labeling tab, and check “MUSYM” as attribute. Click on 'Font options' and select a font size of 7, black letters on white back ground.
    
   
4. The Map is now labeled with MUSYM (Map Unit Symbols).
   
   
5. You can create a printout with the print tool. Go to the Print tool icon on the Navigation Toolbar at the top. The map layout preview appears. On the map layout, you can setup your title, move the north arrow, select references, save to a file or send to the printer, and other options.
   

You can create a table by exporting to a MS Excel spreadsheet.

1. Click on the “Soils” layer in the References Panel to make it active.
   
   
   
2. Select soil map units by clicking on the “Rectangle Selection” tool  on the left of the Navigation Toolbar, and drawing a window to include them.
   
   
3. Click on the Information tool icon. . Once the information table is shown, click on Export, save it to your local disk, and the excel spreadsheet will be created. You can delete there the unwanted columns.

Exercise 02 - Create a map with field numbers and acres

1. Click on the “Fields_NRCS” layer to make it active
   
   
2. Select the Edit layer properties tool.
   
   
3. The Layer Properties screen appears. Click on the Symbology tab, then on the Label group, and then select the “FIELD_NAME”, "ACRES" attributes.
   
   
4. Click on 'more options' to separate both fields by comma, and position labels in the middle center
   
   
   
5. Now, you can enter annotations (or map labels, as we call them). We are going to put a legend to show the water well . Bring on the Edition panel and click on the Map Labels tool .
   
   
6. Pick a point close to the well , and then write your annotation. You have different options for formatting the text, assigning color to the line, inserting a picture in the annotation box, and many more.
    
   
   
7. Once you have formatted the label, you can just drag the annotation for its final position. Note that the legend shows a leading circle to the initial point where you started.
   
   
8. If you would like to edit an existing map label, click on the Edit objects tools and then click on the Map Labels tool . Double-click on the legend that you’d like to edit. If you would like to turn on and off the legends, click on the Show / Hide Labels toggle .

Exercise 03 - Printing maps

When you are ready to produce the map report, click on the option Print tool on the “Navigation Toolbar” on top.

The map layout screen will appear. You can add titles, north arrow, scale, legend, and other map configuration.
