In this learning guide, you will learn to deliver a plan to the NCPDB using GeoAgro GIS. You will first upload your documents and data layers to Document Exchange, and then will upload your practices to the NRCS Conservation Planning Database.

Where to Do the Exercises

The first step to complete the exercises in this tutorial is to set up the computer you will be working on. If you completed our Getting Started Course, your system and datasets are ready to go through this learning guide. You will be able to use our GeoAgro GIS trial version for 2 months. From now on, you are ready to begin with any learning guide you wish.

Exercise 01 – Upload your plan data to Document Exchange

In this exercise you will learn to send your plan data to NRCS Florida via Document Exchange. First, you will export your plan project from GIS. Then, you will log-in via USDA E-authentication and upload the plan into Document Exchange along with the required layers.

Note Note: You need to have a Technical Service Provider Eauthentication level 2 user & pwd, and be authorized to access your customer’s folder’s data. This requires two steps:

Getting a USDA account – learn more Getting access to customer’s folders – learn more For this tutorial sample farm, you can use TSP training credentials provided by GeoAgro, to have access to the NRCS training database.

Export your plan data with GeoAgro GIS

To export your plan data, you will be using the “Export layers” tool. Move over to the data menu in the right side of the screen and click on the “Tools to export data” drop down menu to see the tools available.

The “Export layers” window will pop up. In this window you will be able to choose the layers that will be exported. Bear in mind that GeoAgro GIS will make available for exporting only those layers that do have features within. To select the layers you want to include, tick the corresponding checkbox. When you're ready, click on “Accept”

Layers that should be included everytime you deliver a plan are:

Buffers and setbacks Spreadable acreage Practices Polygon Practices Line Practices Point Fields (NRCS) Fields (Producer) Tracts Wells Streams

After clicking on “Accept” a window will pop up asking you for the folder you want to use to export your layers. Choose one and click on “Save”

The shapefiles with your plan data will be saved in the location you chose.

Log in Cplanner using USDA e-authentication

We will now upload the plan to the NRCS Document Exchange. This is a file repository that can be accessed by TSPs and NRCS personnel via Cplanner. To begin, start CPlanner (Go to the start menu or double click on the CPlanner icon in your desktop).


Log in with your e-authentication user and password data and click on “Login”.

Search for customer folders

The initial screen will show you your conservation plans. Select “Palm Beach County” and click on “Go Search”.

This will bring the list of Conservation folders available for your user in Palm Beach County.

The conservation plans shown on the left panel are obtained directly from NRCS Servers. The status bar on the lower side of the screen informs you of the status of your operations.

Check-out a customer folder for editing

On the right panel, click on the “der----Geoagro1” folder to select it; right click on it and select “Check out” to check out for editing.

A window will pop up asking for your confirmation. Click on ”Yes, I'm sure”.

You'll notice the folder you downloaded now appears again on the right panel, which contains the customer folders that are available locally (in your computer). This time it's coloured green; that means it's in editable mode.

Open a customer folder for editing

On the right panel, click on the “der----Geoagro1” folder to select it and click on “Open folder” to open it.

Cplanner will open the Customer folder window.

Upload your plan data to Document Exchange

To access Document Exchange, click on the “Document Exchange” tab.

Wait for the folder structure to be created; once it's ready, you should see a window like the one below:

Within this tab you will be able to upload files to any of the folders listed in the tree. Click on the “Plan_Reports” folder to open it. Click on “Upload” to upload your exported plan data.

A window will pop up asking you for the file you want to upload. Browse to the shapefiles and select them along with your Plan Document, then click on “Open” to upload and wait for the upload to complete.

The uploaded files will show up on the folder in Document Exchange.

Exercise 02 – Adding data to a customer folder

In this exercise you will learn how to use Cplanner to upload CNMP practices to the National Conservation Planning Database (NCPDB). First, you will open a folder you previously ckecked out for editing. Then, you will create a new conservation plan for your plan data. Then, you will add the land unit and tract where the practice will be performed. Then, you will add a new practice. Finally, you will upload the new practice to the NCPDB.

Create a new conservation plan

Click on the “Conservation plans” tab to go back

Click on “New item”

Click on “Conservation plan” and then on “Next”

Enter the new CNMP plan name and click on “Next”

Click on “Finish”. The new CNMP plan will show up.

Add tract and land unit

Click on “New item”

The “New item” window will pop up. Click on “Land unit” and then click on “Next”

In “Select a Conservation Plan”, select your new conservation plan.

In “Add a land unit” complete the form as shown below:

Complete the land unit properties as shown below and click on “Next”

In the “Final step” window, click on “Finish”.

Add a new conservation practice

Click on Land unit “1” under “Tract 1” on the new conservation plan to select it.

Click on “New Item”.

The “New item” window will pop up. Click on “Scheduled practice” and then click on “Next”.

In “Select a Conservation Plan”, select your new conservation plan

In “Select a land unit...” click the checkbox for land unit 1 and click on “Next”

In “Select the datasource of the scheduled practices” click on “Available practices” and click on “Next”.

A list of available practices will come up. Look for the “Filter Strip”, practice code 393.

Check it to select the practice. Click on “Next”

Cplanner will move on to the “Add practice properties” window. Click on “Narrative” to select a narrative.

Select the first-listed narrative (code 00N). Click on “Ok”

Drop down the Program menu to select “EQIP”


Uploading

In “Planned amount” enter the number of acres shown in the Filter Strip. In “Planned date” enter the date planned for the practice.

Leave the “Additional info...” form untouched and click on “Next”.

In the “Final step” window, click on “Finish”. Your practices will appear listed under the corresponding land unit.

Upload your additions

Click on “Check in” to upload your newly created practices and wait for the download to complete.

You'll notice the customer folder has disappeared from the right panel and is coloured green on the left panel.
