Where to Do the Exercises
The first step to complete the exercises in this tutorial is to set up the computer you will be working on. You may either:
- Work on your own computer: If you completed our Getting Started Course, your system and datasets are ready to go through this learning guide. You will be able to use our GeoAgro GIS trial version for 2 months. From now on, you are ready to begin with any learning guide you wish.
- Work on a virtual computer provided by GeoAgro: This does not require any previous installation. See Prepare a GGS Tutorial on a virtual computer
The following instructions apply to either method, unless otherwise specified.
Exercise 01 – Data Associated with a Layer
Add, Modify, View, and Delete Files Associated with a Layer
In this exercise you will associate a .pdf file containing Map Units description for an entire county, with a layer.
Download the file from http://www.geoagro.com/downloads/sampledata/iowa/hardin/MapUnitDescription_HardinCounty.pdf to your computer and remember it's location.

Activate the Soils layer in the Reference Panel. Go to the Navigation Panel and click on the arrow for the Interaction Module tool-set drop-down menu
. Select the Layer Files option.
A window called 'File Manager' will pop-up where you will be able to choose the file to be associated. Go the upper menu in the dialog box and click on the Add File button
.
Browse for the file 'MapUnitDescription_HardinCounty.pdf', which you have previously downloaded. Click on OK. A dialog box will pop-up displaying the following information:
In case you do not wish this box to be displayed each time you upload a file using the Interaction Module, check the “Do Not Display This Message Again” box. Click on OK.
Go back to the Interaction Module tool. Select the Layer Files Viewer.
Once the viewer is ON, the tool icon looks like this
Place your cursor on the layer that you have associated with the .pdf file. A message will be displayed regarding the contents and properties of the layer.
In order to view the associated file, click on 'MapUnitDescription_HardinCounty.pdf', which is highlighted in green. The file will opened.
| | Note: | You can associate as many files as you wish, the only limitation is the amount of free space you may have in your computer |
Now you will delete the file associated with the layer. Go back to the Navigation Panel and click on the arrow for the Interaction Module tool-set drop-down menu
. Select the Layer Files option. 
Select the file and click on the Delete File tool
in the upper menu.
You will be asked to confirm the removal of the file. Click on Yes.

In this exercise you will associate a .pdf file containing information regarding one specific Map unit with it's corresponding object from the Soils layer.
Download the file from http://www.tekconsultants.net/files/Support/Tutorial/GGS/MapUnitDescription_95-HarpsLoam.pdf to your computer and please remember it's location.

Activate the 'Soils' layer in the Reference Panel and Click on the Search tool
and fill it as follows.
After clicking on Accept, you'll receive a message like this.
Go to the Navigation Panel and click on the arrow for the Interaction Module tool drop-down menu
. Select the Object Files Viewer option.

A window called 'File Manager' will pop-up where you will be able to choose the file to be associated. Go to the upper menu in the dialog box and click on the Add File button
.
Browse for the file 'MapUnitDescription_95-HarpsLoam.pdf', which you have previously downloaded. Click on Ok. A dialog box will pop-up displaying the following information:
In case you do not wish this box to be displayed each time you upload a file using the Interaction Module, check the “Do Not Display This Message Again” box. Click on Ok.
As you can see below, the file has been attached to the object:
Close the File Manager. Go back to the Interaction Module tool. Select the Object File Viewer.
This is what the tool icon looks like:
Place your cursor on the 'Crops' layer. A mark will appear on the '95' object. Select it. The name of the file associated with the object will be displayed in green font.
If you click on the link, the file will be opened.
Next you will delete the file associated with the layer object. Go back to the Navigation Panel and click on the arrow for the Interaction Module tool-set drop-down menu. Select the Object Files option.
Place your cursor on the file and click on the Delete File tool
in the upper menu:
You will be asked to confirm the removal of the file. Click on Yes.
