Navigating your maps in the Field

Jump to: navigation, search

When you are at the field, it may be useful to be able to 'navigate' your maps, or in other words, see your location while you are at the field.

You have various options for this purpose. {NO_TOC}

1. Using a Notebook with GeoAgro GIS and a connected GPS

In this option, you need to hava a notebook with GeoAgro GIS installed, and a connected Handheld GPS.

While you are  in the GIS map window, just click on the GPS Icon GIS gis Navi 09 01.jpg  at the top navigation toolbar, to get connected to the GPS and see your location while you move around the field. You will also see a GPS information window showing your connection status, Coordinates, and other information.

Please review Connecting to a GPS device to learn more.

2. Using a Smartphone with Google Earth or Google Maps

There are two steps, creating the information and viewing it in your smartphone

2.1. Create farm layers in .kmz format

The .kml/.kmz format is used by Google Earth/Google maps format to store geographic information. (see What is the .kmz format?)

GeoAgro GIS is one of the options for creating .kmz files:

  • First, you need to create farm information - land unit boundaries, soil map units, samples, etc., that you'd like to share as .kmz
  • Second, you can use the Export to .kmz option to export it as a .kmz file

Also, if you are using GeoAgro's farm information services, such as NDVI maps, Productivity maps, or other products, the delivered information layers are provided in different formats for use in various GIS softwares, including .kml/.kmz file. (these services will be available in the Second Quarter 2011)

You may review this Sample Productivity map in .kmz format:

  • first, make sure that you have Google Earth installed (you can download it from here)
  • download this Sample Productivity map (right-click on the link and 'Save as...)
  • look for the dowloaded file, and double-click it to open with Google Earth. Or, open Google earth, and use the file menu to open it.

2.2 View it on a smartphone

The next step is to open the .kmz file in your smartphone, using Google Earth or Google maps. Please review this article: How can I view a .kmz (Google Earth) file in my smartphone?
