Where to Do the Exercises
The first step to complete the exercises in this tutorial is to set up the computer you will be working on. If you completed our Getting Started Course, your system and datasets are ready to go through this learning guide. You will be able to use our GeoAgro GIS trial version for 2 months. From now on, you are ready to begin with any learning guide you wish.
Exercise 01 – Download plan data from Workgroups
In this exercise you will learn to download to your computer plan data uploaded by stewardship foresters. First, you will log in the GeoAgro Workgroups database. Then, you will import your plan project from Workgroups into GIS and download the required layers.
Log in Workgroups database
Click on the “Workgroup” tab.A login window will pop up. Complete the form with your user and password.
Download the plan data layers
Click on the “Maine Forestry” folder to open it.
Select the folder “SF1” and click on “Download”. Wait for the download to complete
Click on the “GIS” tab to go back to the GIS module.
Look at the Reference Panel. You'll notice there's five new layers; “Stand types” and “Property boundary” grouped under “Plan development” and Practices points, polygons and lines grouped under “Conservation practices”.
Exercise 02 – Review the plan data
In this exercise you will learn how to review the plan data you just downloaded. First, you will check the data created by the stewardship forester and review if it complies with the requirements for a stewardship plan. Then, you will check out the layers for offline editing. Finally, you will add a note for the stewardship forester to complete empty fields.
Check the downloaded data
Double click on the “Practices polygon” layer to zoom to it.
Select it with the “Rectangle selection” tool.
Download imagery from Maine State GIS to have an aerial view of the practice area. Click on the “eye” icon and tick the checkbox to make it visible.
If nothing comes up or the imagery looks too pixelated, try updating the wms by clicking on “Update the WMS layer”.
Open the practice attributes by clicking on “Edit the selected object's data”.
Notice the “Recurring” attribute is empty (the checkbox is neither empty nor checked).
You will now add a note to inform the Forester he/she should complete this field. Click on “Cancel” to close the Object's data window.
Check out the layers for offline editing
Click on the “Workgroup” tab to go back.
A message will ask you if you want to save your changes in GIS. Click “Yes” if you want to save your work from the last time you saved; otherwise click “No”. If you answered “Yes”, when the saving is done, click on “Accept”
Click on the “Maine Forestry” folder to open it. Select the folder “SF1” and click on “Edit” to check out for editing all the layers it contains.
Add a note requesting changes
Open your text editor of choice and write the following note:
| | Note: | “Dear SF,
I've been reviewing your plan and I just noticed you missed filling the "Recurring" attribute. Please, fill it and re-upload the layers.” |
Save your note.
Click on “Practices polygon” and select the practice with the “Rectangle selection” tool. Drop down the “Module interaction” menu and click on “Object files”.
The “File manager” will pop up. Click on “Add file”.
Browse to your note and click on “Open”
The note has been attached to the polygon and shows up in the “File Manager”. Click on “Accept” and close the “File manager”
Click on “Object files viewer” to see the icon linking to your note.
Click on the icon to make sure it is the note you just added.
