In this example, you will get access to imagery using a WMS data source.

WMS stands for Web Map Service - a standard protocol for serving georeferenced map images over the Internet that are generated by a map server using data from a GIS database.  Please visit this WMS Article for more information.

GeoAgro GIS uses this open standard and allows you to connect to several imagery data sources, public and private.

Let’s Add a new layer and connect with a service providing orthophotos and imagery:

1. Click on “Add New Layer” tool.

2. The “Layer Creation Wizard” will appear. Click on “Layer WMS (Web Mapping Service)” and click on “Next”.

3. Type in the Layer Name, Group Name, and URL for the WMS. In this example we can use:

a. Layer Name: Orthophotos

b. Group Name: WMS Data Sources

c. URL: http://terraservice.net/ogccapabilities.ashx

Note Note: If the url above is not working, please try with this WMS Source: http://geoposer.com:443/server/services/ve.xml

4. Click on "Next", and it will give you a choice of the available layers contained in this WMS Service. Click on"DOQ" to view orthophotos. If you’d like to access topography data, you can create another layer, and in this step click on"DRG" to view topography.

5. A new layer has been created in the reference panel.

6. Turn it on, and then use the pan or zoom tools from the"Navigation Toolbar" to display the imagery.

7. If you’d like to save the background image to have it accessible offline (and also to improve performance), once you have found your farm operation, you can do the following:

a. Click on the Recently created layer to make it active.

b. Click on the"Save WMS" image tool.

c. Enter the name of the layer where you want to save your image (in this case: “Ortho_sample farm”).

8. A new layer “Ortho_sample farm” has been created with the saved image. This layer is available offline. If you’d like to improve performance, you can turn off the original WMS layer.
