How to do a field navigation from a KMZ file

This tool will show you how to navigate sampling points in the field using a mobile device. These are the tools we will use:

  1. GeoAgro GIS: where we will select the sampling points to navigate in the field
  2. Google Drive: where sampling points will be stored.
  3. Locus Free: we'll use this tool to do the field navigation.

GeoAgro GIS

Using GeoAgro GIS, we'll export the sample points to a .KMZ file following these steps:

  1. Click on the Export to a KMZ file (Google Earth) tool, which will be find among the Tools for exporting data

  2. To export:
    1. Select the layers you'd like to export
    2. Check the "Export layer with attributes" box
    3. Check the "Compatible with mobile devices" box
    4. Click on "Export"

  3. Enter a name for your KMZ export and browse to the destination folder.

Google Drive

We'll use Google Drive to share the KMZ file from your PC:

In your PC=
  1. Open your web browser, then access Google Drive
  2. Go to your main Google Drive folder, then create a new folder and name it 360

  3. Access the 360 folder, then create a new folder with the name of your farm.

  4. Access the folder for your farm, then upload the KML files.

From your mobile device=
  1. From your mobile device, open the Drive app.

  2. Access the 360 folder; then the farm folder.

  3. Select the KML file, then open its properties.

  4. Enable the "Download" option.

Locus Free

We'll use Locus Free to navigate the sampling points. These are the steps:

  1. From your mobile device, open Locus Free and open the menu.

  2. Tap on More to access the rest of the settings.

  3. Choose the Import data option.

  4. Browse to your downloads folder, then tap on the .KMZ file.

  5. Tap on Import.

  6. If a message such as the one shown below shows up, tap on "Apply to all" (A), then "Overwrite" (B)

  7. Locus Free will show your sampling points ready for navigation.
